A garage door is one machine. Springs lift it, cables and drums translate that lift, rollers and track guide it, and the opener only nudges a load the springs already carry. An estimate written without opening the whole thing is a guess. We read every part, name which one failed and which one caused it, and you decide from there.
It will not budge, and it thumped
Spring repair and replacement, torsion and extension. Wire size, inside diameter and wind count matched to the door in front of us. On a two-spring door we replace the pair: the survivor has the same cycles on it as the one that let go.
The motor runs, the door stays put
Opener repair and installation. Chain, belt and screw drive, plus boards, travel limits, force settings and photo-eyes. A new head fitted to an unbalanced door fails the same way the last one did.
It grinds, bangs and drags
Cable, roller and track repair. Frayed or jumped cable, a drum out of its groove, flattened rollers, dry bearings, pinched track. Nearly all garage door noise starts here, and it is what people replace the opener over.
It sits crooked in the opening
Off-track and misaligned door correction. One side riding high, binding at a fixed point in the travel, or fully out of the track. Squared, re-seated and re-tensioned, and we find what pulled it out.
A section is caved in
Panel replacement and new residential door installation. One section swaps where profile, gauge and model line up. Where they do not, a badly matched panel looks worse than the dent, and a new door set square is the honest answer.
Nothing is wrong yet
Annual maintenance and tune-up, plus commercial and roll-up doors. Cycle count sets the interval, not the calendar. Hinges, bearings, photo-eye alignment, force settings and a balance test.
Questions worth asking before anyone starts
Why does the door go up but not stay up?
That is spring tension, not the opener. Disengage the trolley, lift the door halfway by hand and let go. A balanced door stays where you put it. If it sinks, the springs have lost tension or one has broken, and the opener has been carrying weight it was never designed to carry.
The motor runs but nothing moves. What went?
Usually the trolley has come off the carriage, or the plastic drive gear inside the opener head has stripped. Neither means the unit is finished, and both are common enough that we carry the parts.
Can one spring be replaced instead of both?
Physically yes, sensibly no. On a two-spring door the second spring has run the same number of cycles as the one that broke. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and keeps you from paying a call-out twice in a season.
Why does it reverse just before it shuts?
The photo-eyes near the floor are dirty, knocked out of alignment, or the closing force is set too low. It is a short check and one of the most frequent reasons anyone calls us.
How quiet should a garage door be?
Quieter than most people assume. Banging and grinding almost always trace to flat rollers, dry bearings or bent track. The opener gets blamed and replaced, the noise stays, and the actual fault is still there.
What does a blinking opener light mean?
On most units it is a diagnostic code, and a blocked or misaligned safety sensor is the usual one. Counting the blinks tells you which fault the board has latched, which is why we ask about it on the phone.
Should the track be lubricated?
No. Oil the hinges, rollers and springs; leave the track clean and dry. Grease in the track collects grit and makes the rollers drag, which is the opposite of the thing you were trying to fix.
How often does a door need servicing?
Once a year covers an average household door. What actually decides it is cycle count — how many times the door opens and shuts — rather than how long it has been since anyone looked at it.
Are insulated doors treated differently?
The hardware is the same but the door is heavier, so the spring specification changes with it. Fitting springs rated for an uninsulated door of the same size is a common mistake and a short-lived one.
Can I test the balance myself?
Yes, carefully. With the door shut, pull the release cord, raise the door to waist height by hand and let go. It should hold. Move slowly, keep clear of the opening, and stop if the door feels heavier than you expected.
